Grumble welcomes submissions from anyone! Send what you’ve got to submissions@grumblemagazine.com.

Genre

Grumble’s focus (and preference) is non-fiction, often with a humorous slant: life ancedotes, observations, cultural analysis, editorials.

We do also publish “serious” works (short stories, poems, etc.), although not as often, and generally not more than one of these per issue.

Length

No real minimum, although we tend to prefer stuff longer than 500 words. The longest we’ve done was 6,000 words, though that’s a fairly rare case. This is especially true for fiction or poetry; we prefer shorter to longer for those.

Editing Process

Grumble’s editorial staff reserves the right to accept or reject any article for any reason. If we turn down your submission, this is not a comment on your character, or even the article itself; perhaps it was just not our style. (We also tend to get more short fiction and poetry than we need, so your odds of a rejection increase for those.)

Our staff reserves the right to edit your article. If you are concerned about the edits we might make, just ask us and we will show you a preview of the results prior to publication. If you are unhappy with the results, you may then withdraw the article before it’s published. (That said, we’re just saying this to cover our tails; we’ve never had an article withdrawn, and we rarely make any changes besides grammar and spelling.)

Format

Preferred format is Microsoft Word or plain text.

You can either include your article right in an email as text, or include it as an attachment; it doesn’t matter to us.

Footnotes

We’ll print ‘em, but we don’t encourage ‘em. They don’t read well on the Web, because the eye can’t just jump to page bottom and back again – the user has to make active mouse-clicks. If you have a legitimate side note or two, that’s fine as a footnote, but humorous asides are better done as parenthetical expressions.

Graphics

Grumble’s art staff is happy to provide the title graphics (and any other graphics) for your article. We welcome suggestions you might have for the graphics.

If you are artistically inclined, you are welcome to submit the graphic yourself. Graphics should be either a GIF or JPG, should be no larger than 450 pixels wide by 250 pixels tall, and should be of a file size no larger than 21K.

Pseudonym

A pseudonym is not required, but nearly everyone’s used one to date, so take that as you will.

Per-Word Rate

USD $0.00 per word. You’ll note we have no advertising. These two facts may be related.

Copyright

You can keep the copyright on your submissions, which seems only fair, given how much we’ll be paying you.
